AI Policy

The University of Vermont Press follows the University’s own Artificial Intelligence (AI) guidance, which encourages responsible use of generative and assistive AI tools, and the Authorship and AI Tools position statement developed by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). This AI policy will be reviewed and updated regularly in response to this rapidly evolving technology.

For Authors

  • Any manuscript content created by or with a generative AI tool, including but not limited to text, images, translations, and references, or edited by or with an assistive AI tool, including text and images, must be disclosed to the editor upon manuscript submission.
  • Manuscripts developed with substantial use of generative AI will not be considered.
  • Under current law, “creative works discovered or created using generative AI may not be … copyrighted” (University of Vermont 2026a).
  • An AI tool cannot be listed as a manuscript author (COPE Council 2024).
  • Authors are responsible for verifying the accuracy, reliability, and appropriateness of any AI-generated content, including references (University of Vermont 2026b).
  • “AI outputs must not include unverified claims, misinformation, or copyrighted material” (University of Vermont 2026b).

For Reviewers

  • Uploading a manuscript, in whole or in part, to a public AI tool is prohibited and is considered a breach of copyright.
  • Reviewers must disclose any use of generative or assistive AI tools in their review reports.

Assistive AI features built into word processing software, such as proofreading assistants, grammar assistants, and citation managers, do not require disclosure under this policy.
