Journal Proposals
UVM Press Diamond Open Access Journal Publishing
The UVM Press partners with scholarly societies and their appointed representatives to establish new diamond open access journals or to migrate existing journals to a diamond open access platform. We provide consultation, strategy, and production services, as well as access to editorial management and publishing platforms, to our journal publishing partners.
Our journal publishing program charges no fees for our services in exchange for an agreement to equal partnership:
- The society and its appointed representatives provide subject-area expertise, appoint editorial personnel, populate and sustain the editorial board, and maintain responsibility for all editorial tasks, including soliciting, reviewing, copyediting, and approving manuscripts for publication.
- The UVM Press collaborates with and advises the society’s appointed personnel, and provides diamond open access publishing expertise, production platforms, digital publishing, and preservation services for the journal’s content.
The UVM Press journal publishing program is built on shared responsibilities and a commitment not to profit, in any way, from published material. Potential society partners must agree to these additional requirements for the lifetime of the publication:
- Publish all journal content under a diamond open access model, without article processing fees, advertising, subscription fees, or membership requirements.
- Copyright work through Creative Commons licenses, which allow free sharing of content within the rules of the chosen license.
- Utilize only the publishing platforms and resources provided by UVM Press.
- Engage in a fair, rigorous peer review process, including identifying and communicating with expert reviewers for each manuscript.
- Publish born-digital materials that are readable online and accessible to users with a wide range of abilities, with an option for authors and readers to download and print articles.
- Appoint and sustain a diverse editorial board, a subset of which makes up the journal subcommittee, to complete the work of developing, launching, and maintaining continuous publication of the journal.
- Maintain a rolling publication schedule.
UVM Press journal partnerships begin with a proposal process and are formalized with a Memorandum of Understanding signed by representatives of the society and of the UVM Press. Affiliation with the University of Vermont is not a requirement for proposals to or publishing with the UVM Press.
The Benefits of Diamond Open Access Journal Publishing with the UVM Press
By partnering with the UVM Press, scholars and societies become active participants in the international open access movement to make information sharing faster, more equitable, and more sustainable. Societies and journals also benefit directly in these ways:
- No start-up or maintenance costs for standard services
- Experienced consultation, management, and production support
- Friendly, accessible online submission and peer review workflows hosted on leading open-source scholarly publishing platforms
- Personalized training and technical support for editorial board members and peer reviewers
- Positioning as active participants and supporters of the diamond open access publishing model
- Association with UVM’s reputation for credibility and academic/research excellence
- Supporting experiential learning opportunities for UVM student interns
Additionally, recent research indicates that open access articles receive more frequent—and more diverse—citations than articles published behind paywalls.
UVM Press publishing partners do not pay for publishing support services that fall within the scope of a partnership agreement. Services outside the scope of this agreement include contracted services provided by vendors outside UVM, such as work by designers and creative professionals, migration of print or online journal content, and custom coding or open-source platform personalization. Other outside services may include language translation services or non-English-language editing. Costs for these services are borne by the journal.
The UVM Press Publishing Team
The UVM Press employs experienced professionals with writing, editing, creative and strategy consulting, project management, and open access publishing expertise.
The editorial director of our Journals Division collaborates with the journal’s appointed editorial board to develop a content strategy, mission/vision, and author guidelines consistent with a publication’s scope, then creates editorial and production workflows compatible with both the board’s capacity and the journal’s rolling publication schedule. Once the journal’s website is live and accepting submissions, she monitors article processing times to ensure efficient turnaround. During production, she provides an additional level of editorial quality control through light copyediting and final proofreading of articles prior to author approval.
The editorial director’s services also include:
- Advising editorial boards on site structure and boilerplate content
- Writing, copyediting, and maintaining site content and downloadable article template files
- Arranging and conducting strategy and policy development sessions
- Developing workflows and attending regular editorial board meetings
- Providing technology trainings for editors who manage online submissions and peer reviews, and offering ongoing support sessions for authors, reviewers, and associate editors
- Serving as traffic manager for each submission, collaborating with the editor(s) in chief throughout peer review and, if applicable, the production and publication process
- Mentoring UVM student interns and overseeing their work
- Managing relationships with outside designers and creative professionals
- Completing indexing and archiving tasks, including generating article DOIs and applying for the journal’s ISSN upon eligibility
UVM Press can recommend outside designers and creative professionals on a paid, case-by-case basis to create specialized content, including photography, illustration, and multimedia.
Outside, platform-specific professionals can be available on a paid, case-by-case basis for extensive content migration.
Proposing a Journal Partnership
Organizations interested in partnering with the UVM Press to publish a new journal or migrate an existing journal must submit a proposal for consideration by the journal evaluation committee. Proposals are reviewed on a rolling basis and those that are viable are accepted. The UVM Press then invites the society to formalize the partnership with a Memorandum of Understanding, signed by representatives of the society and of the UVM Press. The signed MOU begins the journal start-up or migration process.
