Publishing Partnerships

The University of Vermont Press collaborates with leading scholars and scholarly societies to develop innovative publishing projects. Affiliation with the University of Vermont is not a prerequisite for publishing with the UVM Press.

We partner with scholarly societies and their representatives to establish new, diamond open access journals or to transition existing journals to a diamond open access platform. We also partner with scholars at all career stages to develop books and book series in their areas of expertise.

Our Publishing Model

Our publishing model is built on shared responsibilities and a commitment not to profit, in any way, from published material. UVM Press collaborators agree to:

  • Publish digitally under a diamond open access model, using Creative Commons licenses
  • Utilize only the publishing platforms and resources provided by UVM Press
  • Forgo all processing charges, subscription fees, and membership requirements associated with their published material
  • Engage in a fair, rigorous peer review process
  • Maintain a rolling publication schedule (for journal articles)

Our Services

The UVM Press provides expert consultation, strategy, editorial, and production services for each publishing project. For journal publishing partners, we also provide access to, training on, and support services for Janeway, the online publishing platform we use for journal article submissions, peer review, production, and publication.

Books Policies

As a diamond open access publisher, the UVM Press promotes equity and fairness in scholarly book publishing.

Honorarium Policy

UVM Press offers our book authors a modest honorarium to compensate them for their time and for their support of diamond open access publishing. 

Book authors are paid an honorarium according to the style of book they are writing for UVM Press: 

  • Monograph: Authors receive $500 with half paid upon signature of the contract and the remaining balance paid upon submission of a production-ready manuscript. 
  • Contributed volume: The lead editor receives $500 with half paid upon signature of the contract and the remaining balance paid upon submission of a production-ready manuscript. 
  • Janus Debates series: Authors receive $1,500 with half paid upon signature of the contract and the remaining balance paid upon submission of a production-ready manuscript. 

Authors submitting alternative forms of content receive an honorarium on a case-by-case basis. 

Payment of an honorarium requires submission of a W-9 or W-8BEN via UVM File Transfer Service. 

Peer Review Guidelines

All book manuscripts considered for publication by the UVM Press are peer reviewed by outside, expert readers and approved by UVM Press’s faculty advisory board prior to publication.

  • In addition to undergoing UVM Press’s own editorial review, all book manuscripts are sent to at least two, non-UVM-affiliated peer reviewers who UVM Press determines to be experts in fields directly or closely related to each manuscript’s subject matter. Expertise is evaluated in terms of scholarly publications, professional rank, advanced degrees in applicable fields, and extensive engagement with recent scholarship in relevant fields.
  • Book manuscripts sent to outside experts are reviewed in a single-anonymous peer review process. Reviewers know the author’s name, but the author does not know the reviewers’ names. Reviewers remain anonymous unless they elect to reveal their names post-publication, for promotional or other purposes. 
  • If UVM Press and outside readers endorse a manuscript for publication, the manuscript then appears before the faculty advisory board for approval. 

When a manuscript receives mixed reviews, meaning one reader supports publication while the other does not, UVM Press reserves the right to either reject the manuscript or ask the author to revise and resubmit for further review. A revised manuscript must receive a positive review from at least one outside expert, who may be one of the two scholars who previously evaluated the project. If both original readers are unwilling or unavailable to review the revised manuscript, UVM Press will solicit a third reader.

A manuscript that receives two negative reviews is rejected. 

Note: Outside readers may not use generative AI to create their reports and are encouraged to limit the use of assistive AI when conducting their reviews. Uploading a manuscript, in whole or in part, to a public AI tool is prohibited and is considered a breach of copyright. Read the UVM Press AI Policy for more information.
